The group's work spans global, regional and polar marine environments and involves collaboration with national and international partners. The team works with the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) through the Joint Marine Modelling Programme and contributes to the NEMO community ocean model. This placement offers an opportunity to explore how data-driven approaches could improve the representation of ocean vertical mixing. Vertical mixing influences ocean stratification and circulation, both of which are important for reliable climate projections, but it is often represented using simplified parametrisations. While machine learning has been applied successfully to the parametrisation of mesoscale eddies, its use for vertical mixing remains limited. You will develop skills in ocean science and machine learning while contributing to improvements in ocean model accuracy and reliability. Your key duties Review literature on recent developments in machine-learning approaches to ocean vertical mixing to understand current limitations. Select and process suitable training datasets for use in ML. Develop and evaluate a data-driven approach to represent or improve aspects of ocean vertical mixing. Assess the performance and validity of the approach using independent data and/or simplified numerical experiments.
