JOB DESCRIPTION Primary objectives for the Coach (Climbing Wall Instructor) will be: To ensure the safety and enjoyment of everybody using the Climbing facilities. To promote excellence of customer service and motivate people to enjoy Climbing through good communications. To maintain a reasonably safe and secure indoor climbing wall operation in line with British Mountaineering Council (BMC), Association of British Climbing Walls (ABC), and HSE guidance. The Coach (Climbing Wall Instructor) will focus day to day on the following tasks: Evaluating performance and providing suitable feedback, balancing criticism with positivity and motivation. Adapting to the needs and interests of group or individual participants. Communicating instructions and commands using clear, simple language. Encouraging participants to gain and develop skills, knowledge and techniques. Ensuring that participants train and perform to a high standard of health and safety at all times. Performing daily, monthly safety checks of climbing walls, equipment, and auto-belay. Immediately quarantining defective or expired equipment, padlocking faulty climbing lines, and reporting defects to the Line Manager. Delivering 6-monthly refresher training to site Climbing Wall Monitors, Supervisors, and Inductors Responding to climbing emergencies and carrying out auto-belay rescue procedures Inspiring confidence and self-belief THE CANDIDATE Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills A recognised coaching/teaching qualification is required for this post. Essential Qualification: Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) certificate approved by Mountain Training (required prior to supervising sessions, conducting inductions, or performing internal inspections). Lead Climbing Qualification: Climbing Wall Development Instructor (CWDI) required to supervise lead climbing sessions. Mandatory Annual Training: Annual review of site operational procedures (DS19) and annual DS20 Climbing Wall Rescue Procedure training. Will be able to communicate throughout the organisation. Will be able to meet the demands of the role by working additional hours when required. Will be able to demonstrate clear identification with all customer requirements. Will be a team player. Will be able to develop the role on your own initiative. DBS Some Coach positions may be classed as a regulated post and therefore may require a DBS Disclosure. Where the individual does not already hold a DBS Disclosure, it will be necessary for the postholder to be submitted for a DBS check.
