Stipendiary and Non-Stipendiary Research Fellowships

Stipendiary and Non-Stipendiary Research Fellowships The College Council wishes to make elections to two Research Fellowships, each tenable for three years and not renewable, to commence on 1 September 2027.  One Fellowship is intended for researchers in the Sciences (including Mathematics, Engineering and the Biological, Medical and Veterinary sciences) and the other for researchers in Law, Politics and International Relations, Economics, Land Economy and Management. Research Fellowships provide opportunities for scholars at an early stage of their academic careers to establish a successful research profile.  The successful candidates are expected to be either post-doctoral researchers who have completed their PhD within the last three years or post-graduate students who are expecting to submit their PhD thesis (or equivalent) no later than June 2027. Candidates for the Sciences Research Fellowship should indicate that they have secured the support of a research group in Cambridge. For laboratory sciences, please also indicate how consumable and other laboratory costs will be covered. The starting stipend will be spine point 30 on the Cambridge University Pay Scale and there will be an automatic increase of one spine point in each of the second and third years. In addition, Sidney currently pays a 2.5% supplement to all Fellows up to spine point 48, and an additional 1.6% Sidney supplement, payable to all College-employed Fellows on top of that. By way of indication, and assuming a 2% cost of living increase in 2026, the current stipend for the first year of a Fellowship in 2026 would be approximately £29,763 per annum . If the Fellow does not hold a PhD, the stipend until the PhD is submitted will be spine point 26, which including the additions referenced above would be approximately £27,399 per annum .  The stipend is pensionable in the USS Pension Scheme. Applications for non-stipendiary positions are welcomed from those whose salary is funded from an alternative source. These applications should be made in the same way as for stipendiary Research Fellowships. In these circumstances, the successful candidate will enjoy the accommodation, dining and all other benefits outlined below, but will not receive the stipend described above. Research Fellows who are keen to acquire teaching experience within the University will be supported to do so, with priority being given to undergraduate supervisions for the College, remunerated at the standard College rate.  Teaching may not exceed four hours per week (up to 80 hours over the academic year).  Prior permission of the College Council is required for other paid work, and all emoluments received must be disclosed to the Council, which may reduce the stipend in the light of other income. The successful Research Fellows will be entitled to Fellows’ dining and other privileges.  College-owned residential accommodation on or close to the College main site is also possible, subject to availability.  One-
