If you’re confident, adaptable, and enjoy variety in your working day, a Cover Supervisor role could be a great way to build your experience in education. At Hays Education, we work closely with secondary schools across Barnsley who are looking for friendly, reliable, and enthusiastic Cover Supervisors to support students when their usual teacher is away. You’ll have the flexibility to choose day-to-day work that suits you, with the chance for longer-term opportunities too. What you’ll be doing Supporting whole classes when the usual teacher is absent Guiding students through pre-planned lesson materials, with no planning or marking required Working with secondary students aged 11–16 Helping students stay focused, positive, and on task throughout the lesson Creating a calm and welcoming classroom environment where students can keep learning Following school routines and sharing helpful feedback with staff where needed Who we’re looking for You don’t need to be a qualified teacher to be a great Cover Supervisor. What matters most is that you’re confident, approachable, and able to build positive relationships with young people. If you enjoy supporting students and can take the lead in a classroom, we’d be happy to speak with you. Experience working with young people aged 11–16 Sports coaching, youth work, mentoring, tutoring, or community leadership experience Previous school-based experience, such as teaching assistant or classroom support work Strong communication skills and the confidence to manage groups A flexible, reliable, and proactive approach This could be a brilliant fit if you’re an aspiring teacher, graduate, experienced support worker, sports coach, youth worker, tutor, or someone simply looking to take the next step into secondary education.
