From enhancing bus priority and optimising traffic signals to supporting major programmes such as Superloop, our teams work collaboratively to deliver practical, customer-focused improvements that make a real difference to millions of journeys every day.
As a Senior Transport Modeller, you'll bring detailed expertise in one or more areas of transport modelling, using your knowledge to help TfL meet its Network Management Duty and support the efficient operation of London's road network. Working at the heart of network performance, you'll contribute to a wide range of modelling activities, including the development of signal schemes, simulation, design, auditing, network impact assessments and public consultations, while helping to balance operational needs with the ambitions of the Mayor's Transport Strategy.
You'll also develop signal timings and modelling approaches that support the delivery of the Mayor's Transport Strategy, helping to shape how the network operates both now and in the future. This will involve contributing to network strategies and applying a range of traffic control techniques, including SCOOT, fixed-time operation, mode-specific priority within UTC, vehicle actuation (V.A.) and congestion management measures.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide expert analysis of transport schemes using advanced modelling techniques, delivering detailed network impact assessments that support Network Performance Delivery and TfL's Network Management Duty
- Develop and optimise signal strategies through multi-modal network modelling, ensuring the efficient operation of London's road network in line with the Mayor's Transport Strategy
- Deliver specialist advice on transport modelling matters to clients, consultants, sponsors, highway authorities, designers and internal stakeholders, covering areas such as highway traffic assignment, demand, deterministic, pedestrian, environmental and microsimulation modelling
- Design, audit and enhance schemes using a range of transport modelling software, including Aimsun, Junctions, Legion, LinSig, SATURN, TRANSYT, Vissim and Visum
- Strengthen modelling capability by supporting the development and application of strategic and tactical demand and traffic assignment methodologies, techniques and tools
- Lead and coordinate studies relating to traffic control strategies, transport modelling applications and the development of innovative modelling approaches
- Evaluate and influence modelling tools by assessing new software releases, recommending enhancements and working with suppliers to improve functionality and performance
- Promote best practice through the development and maintenance of quality assurance processes, procedures and guidance, including TfL's modelling standards and auditing frameworks
- Develop technical capability by designing and delivering training on transport modelling software, tools and techniques for colleagues and consultants
- Support signal control optimisation through the review, design, implementation and enhancement of UTC and local signal control strategies, including SCOOT, Fixed Time, Selective Vehicle Detection (SVD), System Activated Strategy Selection (SASS), Vehicle Actuation (VA) and MOVA
- Coach and mentor colleagues by providing technical guidance, supervision and support to less experienced team members and consultants during transport modelling activities and projects
