Job Description
Location: Wey & Godalming Nav
Contract Type: Full Time Permanent
Reference: IRC178341
Closing Date: 26th July
Salary: £27,612
Internally you will be known as a Lengthsperson
We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as a Lengthsperson. You'll live and work alongside the historic Wey Navigations in rural Surrey, helping to care for its wildlife, heritage and visitors for future generations.
Accommodation is provided to the postholder for the proper or better performance of their duties, in accordance with Trust criteria and HMRC rules.
What it's like to work here
The Wey Navigations is a tranquil waterway stretching nearly 20 miles through Surrey.
Reporting to the Head Lengthsperson and based at Triggs Lock near Guildford, you'll be part of a dedicated team. Some days you'll work independently and on others alongside colleagues and volunteers, all contributing towards shared conservation and visitor experience goals.
With ambitious plans for the future of the Wey Navigations, this is a great opportunity to help shape and improve this special place.
What you'll be doing
You'll take responsibility for your own section of the Navigation while supporting work to maintain and enhance its conservation value, accessibility and presentation.
Responsibilities include monitoring and managing weirs and water levels, ensuring the Navigation is safe, well maintained and looking its best. You'll undertake practical conservation and habitat management work, assist with maintenance activities and support projects that protect and improve the landscape.
You'll also engage with visitors, answering questions and helping them make the most of their time on the waterway.
This is a varied outdoor role where no two days are the same. It is ideal for someone who enjoys practical work, problem solving and working in a unique historic environment.
Who we're looking for
We'd love to hear from you if you have:
- A working knowledge of conservation and biodiversity.
- Practical experience in land, conservation, or access management, supported by relevant qualifications or equivalent experience.
- Competence using tools and machinery such as strimmers, mowers and chainsaws.
- The ability to plan, organise and prioritise your own workload.
- A passion for conservation and delivering excellent customer service.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently while contributing to a supportive team.
