Job Description
Browning Forestry Ltd is seeking expressions of interest from Forestry Surveyors to support the delivery of National Forest Inventory (NFI) and Trees Outside Woodland (TOW) field surveys across the UK, subject to the award of a forthcoming Forest Research contract.
Since 2010, Browning Forestry Ltd has provided reliable forestry field data to the Forestry Commission and Forest research, delivering continuity of interpretation and a consistently high standards of survey work across long-term programmes.
The work would be offered on a self-employed subcontractor basis and would be particularly suitable for recent Forestry graduates looking to gain practical field survey experience, as well as those with existing forestry survey experience. Subject to contract award, the anticipated duration of the programme is 3–5 years, providing the opportunity for regular and ongoing field survey work. The programme is currently expected to commence in October 2026.
Applicants should:
Essential
- Hold a minimum Foundation Degree in Forestry (or a related discipline).
- Have strong tree identification and fieldwork skills.
- Be comfortable working independently.
- Have good navigation skills and be confident using maps and a compass in remote locations.
- Have knowledge of silvicultural systems and practices.
Desirable
- Ideally have experience with GIS, GPS and woodland mensuration.
- Have an understanding of the National Vegetation Classification (NVC) system and be able to use support material to key out and identify woodland vegetation communities.
Training and calibration will be provided to ensure consistency of survey methods and data collection.
