Location: Ullswater, Tower Buildings, Penrith, CA11 0JS
Contract Type: Permanent, full-time
Reference: IRC176240
Closing Date: 28th June 2026
Salary: £27,612 per annum
Summary
As a Ranger, you’re a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors. Our nature strategy is very ambitious, and as a Ranger you will have opportunity to be part of these exciting times!
You will work Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm. You will also be expected to work approximately 10 weekend and Bank Holiday days during the busy Summer months.
What it's like to work here
As an Ullswater/Grasmere Ranger, you will be part of a team of three working predominantly across these areas, but you will regularly be asked to work on the wider portfolio including Windermere, Langdales and Coniston.
Over the last 10 years working with our farm tenants, we have completed some great nature recovery projects, including 2 km of river restoration, over 500 ha of wood pasture and peatland restoration, and hay meadow restoration through the planting of tens of thousands of wildflower plugs.
You will be assisting our ambition for nature recovery by improving habits through tree planting, invasive species control and woodland management. This will involve working closely with our farm tenants, local community, volunteers and other organisations. A major part of the role will be looking after our estate, which includes boundary repairs, maintaining and improving access for our visitors.
What you'll be doing
You’ll be helping to protect and care for habitats, wildlife, buildings and machinery. Whenever and wherever you come across people, you’ll take the time to talk to them and answer their questions.
You’ll make sure that the conservation work and outdoor experiences on the land in your care are of the highest standard. You’ll build relationships in the local community, proudly representing the Trust and letting people know about the work you are doing.
Who we're looking for
- Practically experienced in conservation work to protect and improve habitats and landscapes.
- Experienced in managing land for access, with high standards of presentation and an eye for detail in your practical work.
- Confident leading volunteers and talking to all kinds of people about the work you’re doing, and why it matters.
- Organised, with the ability to work independently and prioritise your work.
- Hard-working, willing to learn and able to work as part of a team.
- Able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines.
- Competent in the safe use of machinery and equipment, with relevant qualifications (e.g. chainsaw, trailer towing, brush cutter, etc.)
- A full UK driving licence
