Job Description

Suffolk Wildlife Trust is offering opportunities for enthusiastic and suitably qualified individuals to join as Assistant Wardens, supporting the management of over 50 nature reserves covering more than 2,900 hectares across north east, west and east Suffolk. These reserves encompass a diverse range of habitats, including wetlands, fens, heathlands, grasslands, ancient woodland, estuarine environments and smaller, locally significant sites. Together, they form a varied and ecologically important network, from large-scale reserves like Carlton Marshes to smaller habitats that protect key species and biodiversity.

The Assistant Warden role focuses on delivering high-quality, practical conservation management across this portfolio. Working under the guidance of a Senior Warden, post holders will help implement management plans, ensuring habitats are maintained and enhanced in line with conservation objectives. This includes completing habitat management tasks, supporting agri-environment scheme requirements, undertaking ecological monitoring and contributing to clear, evidence-based reporting. The role also involves operational responsibilities such as preparing contractor specifications, supervising works, and maintaining equipment, infrastructure and vehicles to a high standard. Where grazing forms part of site management, maintaining high livestock welfare standards is essential.

Engagement with people is a central part of the role. Assistant Wardens will help oversee and support volunteers, contribute to work planning and ensure Health and Safety procedures are followed. They will also play a key role in creating welcoming, accessible reserves that act as flagships for the Trust, maintaining trails, signage and visitor facilities. Acting as ambassadors, they will engage with visitors, lead activities such as guided walks, and support events and communications that promote the Trust’s work.

To succeed, candidates should have relevant experience in conservation management, a strong understanding of habitats and agri-environment schemes, and good IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft 365 and a willingness to use GIS and CRM systems. Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills are important, alongside a practical, adaptable and self-motivated approach. A commitment to environmental conservation and the ability to work outdoors in all conditions is essential.

These are full-time, permanent roles (37.5 hours per week), typically Monday to Friday, with a salary of up to £27,385 depending on experience.
