Job Title: Visiting Music Teacher - Piano
Location: Macclesfield
Salary: £21.90 per 30 minute lesson
Job Type: Self Employed, Part Time
The King's School in Macclesfield is seeking a well-qualified Visiting Music Teacher to plan and deliver outstanding piano lessons to individuals of all standards (from beginner to Grade 8) from September 2026.
It is hoped that the successful applicant would encourage and support their pupils in performing in school ensembles, concerts and events throughout the school year, in addition to individual teaching. The role is self-employed and reports to the Director of Music. The appointee will be expected to work independently and show considerable initiative.
This post is initially for one year from September 2026 to cover a sabbatical, however there is the possibility of this being made permanent if pupil numbers demand this.
About the role:
- Plan and teach well-structured, engaging and effective lessons that motivate, inspire and improve pupil attainment (technique, aural skills, music theory). Lessons will normally be on a one-to-one basis but will occasionally include small groups or ensembles
- Demonstrate excellent performance skills (including sight reading)
- Adapt their teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all students
- Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge students
- Prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity examinations (where appropriate)
- Liaise closely with members of staff re timetables
- Maintain up-to-date records of pupil attendance
- Communicate effectively with parents on an informal basis re pupils' progress (e.g. by telephone, using students' Practice Books to communicate in writing)
- Attend and support school concerts/events during the year as agreed with the Director of Music
- Assess (including writing formal reports) and set targets for students on a regular basis
About You:
Education & Qualifications
- Appropriate performance qualifications
- Appropriate qualifications in music theory
- Further teaching qualifications/CPD in current best practice (instrumental teaching pedagogy) would be desirable
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Experience of teaching staff notation
- Experience of working with a wide range of ages and abilities
- Understanding of current best practice re: teaching young pianists
- Excellent sight-reading skills
- Ability to adapt their teaching to meet the needs of all students
- Experience of/ability to keep up to date records of pupil attendance and create their own weekly timetables
- Experience of entering students for examinations is preferred but not essential

Music is a popular subject within the school and enjoys success across all age ranges. The Department is housed in its own wing of the main academic building across two floors. It includes four teaching rooms for the teaching of academic lessons.
The Department also has its own Recital Hall for smaller concerts and performances can seat around 100 guests. Larger concerts take place in the Drama Studio (to seat approximately 200 guests) or the Jackson Hall (which can seat approximately 650 guests). There is also a dedicated instrument store and departmental office.
