Job Description

The Tweed Foundation is a charitable trust working to protect, improve and enhance the stocks of all native freshwater fish species within the River Tweed system. We are at the forefront in bringing a professional, scientific approach to fisheries management and are engaged in an extensive programme of biological monitoring and habitat enhancement with the aim of protecting the Tweed’s valuable fish stocks and maximising the river’s natural productivity. The Tweed Foundation works closely with the River Tweed Commission, the body which, by law, protects and manages the salmon and other freshwater fish in the River Tweed.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for someone to join our award-winning team as an Education and Community Engagement Officer.

The Foundation runs a highly successful education programme, principally based on our “Go Wild for Fish” initiative for schools and our angling development initiative “TweedStart”. We have added to our learning resource through our citizen science initiative-guardians of the Tweed and the Ian Gregg Rivers Academy, based at our headquarters, through which we deliver a range of practical training seasons such as the anglers riverfly monitoring initiative (ARMI), water chemistry analysis and the prey diet of piscivorous birds. We are a partner of “Inspire Learning”, the multi-award-winning education transformation programme in the Scottish Borders.

The Officer will work with primary schools and higher and further education establishments. They will liaise with relevant partners, agencies, and members of the public to help raise awareness of the River Tweed and the central role it plays within the catchment. The job will involve networking with key organisations, developing educational materials and training programmes, delivering sessions and events.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate that they are self-motivated and are passionate about improving the environment and engaging with young people and the wider community through environmental education. They will be an excellent communicator, able to demonstrate the successful delivery of projects, with a background in the environmental or educational sector. A knowledge of the Tweed catchment, angling and/or land and water management is desirable.
